You might find that time (is) productive to waste

Listed in ZivaHub and Deakin Research Online and DMU Figshare — shown once because both records carry DOI 10.25439/rmt.34002735

BACKGROUND Post-consumer waste can confront questions of temporality, value, and harm, making visible hidden flows of consumption and pollution (Morton 2017).

Description

Artists Liz Magor and Tenant of Culture work with fashion and textile materials already discarded by commercial fashion economies to provoke such reflections. These approaches align with marginal practices of gleaning, where chance, labour, cycles of use, disuse and reuse offer renewed perspectives on extraction, production and consumption.

This research extends Wearing out Sovereign by adding specific restoration methods for found, broken, and discarded materials.

CONTRIBUTION You might find that time (is) productive to waste explores gleaning as an alternate sourcing method, using down-cycled garment rags that are cleaned, pressed, starched and fixed to coated stretched canvas, forming compositions presented as images. Stains, markings, and signs of wear prompt audiences to consider the origins of these materials and the mass-consumption models they reveal.

Exhibited alongside a black velvet dress bearing a large composition of scrap metals, primarily broken fashion hardware, applied using traditional embellishment techniques in non-hierarchical assemblages, the work transforms post-consumer fashion waste. Treated as image and textile sculpture, it disrupts garment intentions of wear, foregrounding gleaned materials over newly produced ones.

SIGNIFICANCE The practice-research includes an exhibition and public lecture at SydneySydney Gallery, Sydney, presenting an exhibition program featuring international and Australian artists, with a focus on historical and contemporary practices including Shelley Lasica and John Nixon.

The project is selected for presentation at the UTS Symposium Opening up the fashion archive, Melbourne Art Fair and Contemporary Art Library inclusion via Contemporary Art Daily. Melbourne Art Fair’s independently curated program emphasises high-quality, conceptually strong proposals, underscoring the project’s recognition within contemporary art discourse.
