Arctic Polar Vortex Strengthening on Seasonal Scales After Extreme Solar Proton Events: Quantitative Evidence for an Ozone–Dynamics Feedback
Listed in ScienceDB
This dataset contains the processed data used in the study entitled “Arctic Polar Vortex Strengthening on Seasonal Scales After Extreme Solar Proton Events: Quantitative Evidence for an Ozone–Dynamics Feedback”.
Description
The dataset provides the key results supporting the analysis of the response of the Arctic polar vortex to extreme solar proton events (SPEs) on seasonal timescales. The study utilizes publicly available global atmospheric reanalysis data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) ERA5 dataset, covering the period from 1986 to 2020.
The original ERA5 data have a horizontal resolution of 1° × 1° and include three-dimensional atmospheric variables. The processed datasets were generated through temporal analysis, radiative heating rate calculations using the Rapid Radiative Transfer Model for GCMs (RRTMG), and Transformed Eulerian Mean (TEM) diagnostics to investigate the ozone–dynamics coupling associated with extreme SPEs. Due to the complexity of the data processing procedures, detailed descriptions of the methodologies, calculation methods, and analysis steps are provided in the corresponding manuscript. The dataset consists of processed data files used to generate the main figures of the manuscript.

These files contain the variables required for the corresponding analysis, including atmospheric ozone, temperature, zonal-mean zonal wind, radiative heating rates, and dynamical heating rates. The temporal information is provided according to the UTC calendar date, while spatial information includes latitude and pressure levels. The dataset covers the Arctic atmosphere, with vertical information mainly focusing on the stratospheric region.
The submitted files are provided in commonly used formats (e.g., csv, nc), which can be accessed and analyzed using standard scientific computing software, including Python (such as NumPy, Pandas, and Xarray), MATLAB, or other data analysis tools. The dataset is intended to provide the processed data underlying the figures and conclusions of the related publication and facilitate reproducibility and further investigation of the impacts of extreme solar proton events on the polar stratosphere.
