The occurrence of Cunninghamia konishii Hayata (1908) in Vietnam

Listed in GBIF

This species has been recorded in Ha Giang, Son La, Thanh Hoa, and Nghe An provinces.

Description

Its habitat has become increasingly fragmented, reduced, and degraded due to agricultural activities and forest fires. The species has been overexploited for timber and essential oil extraction.

The population size is small and is estimated to have declined by more than 50% over the past 20 years (Nguyen Tien Hiep, 2023). The trees grow scattered in small patches within tropical monsoon evergreen mixed forests on low to mid-elevation mountains, typically on soils weathered from granite or other silicate rocks, at elevations ranging from 960 to 2000 meters. Natural regeneration from seeds is rarely observed under the forest canopy, but seedlings are more commonly found in landslide-prone areas or recently burned sites.
