Pantograph Arcing in DC Railway Systems: Transient Behavior of Voltage and Current Recorded at Pantograph

Listed in Teesside University Research Data Repository

The data provide the time waveform of the voltage (Vp), expressed in Volt, and the current (Ip), in Ampere, recorded at the pantograph of a 3 kV DC railway locomotive and a metro 1.5 kV DC electro-train.

Description

For a better comprehension of the electrical conducted effects triggered by the arc events, the dataset is supplemented with the voltage measured after the inductor of the low-pass LC input filter (Vf) and the chopped current flowing in one of the two braking rheostat elements (Ir).

The aim is to provide the transient behavior of these electrical quantities at the input stage of a DC traction unit triggered by electric arcs occurring at the pantograph. The waveforms were measured by means of voltage transducers of 1 MHz bandwidth and current transducers of 10 kHz bandwidth, and an acquisition system (16 bits resolution) with a maximum sample rate of 1 MSa/s without antialiasing filter. The data were sampled at 50kSa/s.

The overall accuracy associated with the provided data is 2%. The Dataset is arranged as follow: - Arcs in the Metro system - 1.5 kV DC - Arcs detected in a braking phase - Arcs detected in traction/ coasting phase - Arcs in the railway system - 3 kV DC - Arcs detected in a braking phase - Arcs detected in traction/ coasting phase The readme_Table.docx file provides information for the codification of the file names and a brief description for each event such as the corresponding train speed.

For each event data are provided both in binary format (.mat) and in Ascii format (.txt). Moreover, figures (.tif) provide a fast overview of each event. For the railway system, the events have been collected on-board the Trenitalia locomotive E464, characterized by a 6 MW rated power [G. Crotti et al., "Monitoring Energy and Power Quality On Board Train," doi: 10.1109/AMPS.2019.8897794].

For the metro system, the events have been collected on-board the Metro de Madrid rolling stock series 9000-3 operating on line 10B [G. Cipolletta et al., "Monitoring a DC Train Supplied by a Reversible Substation," presented at I2MTC 2020 May 25-29, 2020 Dubrovnik, Croatia]. Acknowledgment The presented activities are performed within the 16ENG04 MyRailS project of the European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research (EMPIR), jointly funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program and the EMPIR participating states.
