Novel electrospun inserts for sustained drug delivery to the anterior segment of the eye

Several parameters were investigated in this project to produce ES inserts with optimum properties such as polymer type, solvent, electrospinning variables, co-axial fibres, and drug loading. The ES inserts were further subjected to sterilization studies (Ethylene oxide vs UV), in vitro/ex vivo biocompatibility studies, and preclinical safety studies.

The optimized ES inserts showed no irritation and toxicity in the hen’s egg test – chorioallantoic membrane assay and the cytotoxic studies, while a minor irritation could be noticed in the Draize studies which are highly likely to be the result of physical abrasion. Overall, this project developed novel approaches for producing optimum ES-based ocular inserts that have the potential to significantly improve the current treatment of several ocular disorders.<br><br><i>Thesis is embargoed until 31 July 2027</i>.<br><br><br>
