World Wide Public Opinion Poll Files

The agency sponsored media and attitudinal public opinion polls among the populations of foreign countries to support its role in advising the President, the Secretary of State, members of the National Security Council, and other key officials on the implications of foreign opinion for U.S. interests and policies.
Description
The poll data were used to provide opinion analyses on international issues, as well as analyses of foreign media treatment of U.S. actions and policies.
The agency conducted m edia surveys to assess the effect of United States informational programs, such as Voice of America radio broadcasts, and foreign informational programs on foreign populations. The agency also conducted attitudinal surveys to determine foreign attitudes about current events in international relations. The agency used the public opinion information acquired through these polls to strengthen foreign understanding and support for United States policies and actions.

This series contains public opinion poll response data relating to international relations, primarily during the Cold War. All of the data files contain respondent demographic data, such as age, education, home region, occupation, and political affiliation. The social surveys in this series are divided between media and attitude polls.
The media poll files contain responses to specific questions about the media habits and information program preferences of foreign populations. The media polls are similar to standard market research public opinion polls. The attitude poll files contain responses to questions about specific international relations issues of importance to United States diplomacy.
The data files in this series represent public opinion polls conducted by the agency in Africa, Europe, Asia, Oceania, Latin America, North Africa, and the Middle East.
