Cologne´s Grain Market 1773-1797

These data series reach until 1797. In 1773 the notation system was changed by a new council regulation. Before this regulation only the most important prices were listed and then an average week price was calculated.

After the regulation change all information from grain brokers, which included every single grain purchase, had to be listed in a special register. This Register therefor contains information on more than 40000 individual transactions from 1773 to 1797. Besides the data on prices, quantities and types of grain, it was also recorded if the transaction was executed between a foreigner and a person from Cologne or between two persons from Cologne.

There is no single case of a transaction between two foreigners. This fact shows that the city of Cologne controlled the intermediate trade in the grain and bread sector. Furthermore there was a list of buyers and sellers, but there was no continuous information on the occupation for each person.

Variables: - Grain prices and sold quantities for different grain types on Cologne´s grain market, - Information about buyers and sellers (name, occupation), - Direction of transaction (between two persons from Cologne, between one person from Cologne and a foreigner)
