De basistraining van de jongens was op Engelse leest geschoeid. Met het A-peloton, samengesteld uit jongens uit de grote steden en uit Brabant, is hij vertrokken met de Indrapoera naar Nederlands-Indië.
Onderweg scandeerden ze: "We gaan je halen, Soekarno". In maart 1947 werd deze man gelegerd bij Tjandjoer op Java, waar hij aanvankelijk een rustige tijd had. Maar na de eerste politionele actie werd de situatie grimmiger.
