A novel hands-on experiment was developed to foster authentic scientific inquiry in chemistry among high school students.
Description
The experiment centers on the rapid synthesis and characterization of a persistent luminescent phosphor, SrAl<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub>:Eu<sup>2+</sup>,Dy<sup>3+</sup>. In contrast to conventional solid-state syntheses that require prolonged high-temperature treatment, the adapted procedure allows students to produce a functional afterglow material in under 5 min, making it accessible and safe for standard classroom environments.
This experiment has been successfully conducted with approximately 100 ninth-grade students during school visits.
