Impact resistance and modelling of ultra high performance fibre reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) plates

Listed in ZivaHub and Deakin Research Online and DMU Figshare — shown once because both records carry DOI 10.17034/32640780.v1

UHPFRC has emerged as a promising material for protective structures due to its exceptional mechanical properties.

Description

However, its implementation is hindered by a lack of comprehensive understanding of its complex mechanical behaviour, particularly under impact loading. This thesis aims to enhance knowledge by investigating the dynamic responses of UHPFRC plates when subjected to impact loads.

The mechanical properties were first examined.

A refined tensile test setup was employed to accurately capture the relationships between stress-strain and stress-crack opening. Constitutive relationships were proposed to achieve a balance between accurate curve prediction and model simplicity. Furthermore, inverse analysis utilizing finite element simulation was conducted to derive precise tensile parameters from flexural testing, while also considering size effects.

The static behaviour and failure mechanisms of UHPFRC plates with varying thicknesses under centrally applied loads were investigated.

A specially designed support rig was utilized to ensure reliable fixed boundary conditions for the UHPFRC plates. Finite element modelling, employing the concrete damage plasticity model, successfully replicated the overall behaviour observed experimentally.

The dynamic responses of UHPFRC plates under impact were examined through drop weight impact tests on plates of varying thicknesses. A validated drop weight setup, equipped with sophisticated instruments, was employed to capture failure modes, crack patterns, deformation, impact force histories, and energy absorption.

A finite element model developed in ABAQUS was used to accurately simulate the impact response. The model's predictive capabilities were evaluated by comparing experimental results, successfully capturing trends in impact force, displacement, and absorbed energy with increasing drop height.

Thesis is embargoed until 31 July 2030.
