Effects of Gradient Spatial Orientation and Hue Span of Icon Background Color on Visual Search Efficiency
Listed in ScienceDB
Before the experiment began, the experimenter explained the task and procedure in detail to the participants, who then signed an informed consent form.
Description
The entire experiment consisted of a practice phase and a formal experimental phase. The practice phase included 5 trials, using stimulus materials different from those in the formal experiment, aiming to help participants become familiar with the task requirement of finding, as quickly and accurately as possible, the match identical to the central target icon within the surrounding icon array, so as to avoid practice effects interfering with the formal experimental data.
The formal experiment used a within-subjects design and comprised 12 experimental blocks, formed by combining 4 gradient spatial orientations and 3 hue spans (4 × 3). Each block contained 10 trials, of which 5 trials had a red target icon and the other 5 had a cyan target icon. To balance practice effects or fatigue effects that might arise from the experimental order, this study used a Latin Square Design [40] to counterbalance the presentation order of the 12 experimental blocks, ensuring that each experimental condition had an equal probability of appearing at each position in the sequence.

The procedure of each trial was as follows: a fixation point "+" was first presented at the center of the screen for 300 ms; then a visual search array was presented, consisting of 1 central target icon and 12 peripheral icons randomly arranged around it, and remained on screen until the participant responded; participants' task was to use the mouse to click, as quickly and accurately as possible, the peripheral icon identical to the central target icon.
The computer system automatically recorded the reaction time from the onset of the search array to the participant's mouse click (i.e., search time) and the accuracy of the click (i.e., search accuracy). To collect subjective evaluation data, participants were required to immediately complete a Paas scale after finishing each block (10 trials). To alleviate visual and cognitive fatigue, after completing the questionnaire, participants could take a self-paced rest of unlimited duration and press any key to continue the subsequent experiment, as shown in Figure 4.
After all 120 trials were completed, the experiment formally ended, and the experimenter thanked the participants and provided compensation.
