Configurable Scanning Submillimeter-wave Instrument / Radiometer (CoSSIR) IMPACTS version 2

Listed in NASA Earthdata CMR

The Configurable Scanning Submillimeter-wave Instrument/Radiometer (CoSSIR) IMPACTS dataset consists of data measured onboard the NASA ER-2 aircraft during the Investigation of Microphysics and Precipitation for Atlantic Coast-Threatening Snowstorms (IMPACTS) field campaign.

Description

IMPACTS was a three-year sequence of winter season deployments conducted to study snowstorms over the U.S. Atlantic coast. IMPACTS aimed to (1) Provide observations critical to understanding the mechanisms of snowband formation, organization, and evolution; (2) Examine how the microphysical characteristics and likely growth mechanisms of snow particles vary across snowbands; and (3) Improve snowfall remote sensing interpretation and modeling to significantly advance prediction capabilities.

The CoSSIR dataset consists of measured ice clouds and brightness temperatures, water vapor profiles, and snowfall rates. CoSSIR data are available from January 5, 2023, through March 2, 2023, in netCDF-4 format. The major update for CoSSIR version 2 (v2) is the correction of the brightness temperature (TB) from Rayleigh Jeans to Planck TB.

Read the rest (1 more)

The version 1 (v1) incorrectly labeled the TB as Planck in the file when it should have been labeled as Rayleigh Jeans. This causes a significant change in the TB for v2. On average, the 170, 177, 180, and 182 GHz channels increase by 4 K, the 325 GHz channels increase by 8 K, and the 684 GHz channels increase by 16 K. The TB difference between versions is relatively constant across all TB values, so this is primarily a bias correction.
