The survey of pollarded willow diversity on Veľkolélsky ostrov Island demonstrated an exceptionally high species diversity of beetles associated with old pollarded willows.
Description
The occurrence of up to 355 beetle species was recorded in the pollarded willows in total, indicating an extraordinarily rich ecological niche. The presence of 39 endangered species and 10 protected beetle species, including 3 species of European importance (Osmoderma barnabita, Cucujus cinnaberinus, Lucanus cervus), was confirmed.
Maintained and regularly pruned pollarded willows represent literal islands of biodiversity in the landscape.
