The Integrated Service Model and the Assessment Instruments of Marital Violence and Child Abuse

Listed in Harvard Dataverse

Both Western and domestic empirical studies provide overwhelming evidence that marital violence and child abuse occur in the same families.

Description

Moreover, the experiences of dual-violence have negative and long-term impact on children. However, the practice of family violence prevention and intervention in Taiwan has not focused on family.

These two issues were often intervened by separate practitioners which resulted uncoordinated services, and therefore, not being able to protect all the victims of family violence. In order to prevent the fragment services, this study aims to establish an integrated service model. To examine the issue of integrated services can avoid the lack of coordination and conflict between the marital violence and child abuse service sectors, and to prevent and end family violence based on the consideration of enhancing all family members’ safety.

This study used multiple data collection methods, including questionnaire and focus group. Five focus groups were held around the nation with 24 professionals participated. Quantitative data was collected from a sample of 38 professionals in public or private agencies.

Results show that there is no consistent model across the nation and lack of standardized procedures for serving dual-violence families. Each model has its own advantages and disadvantages. Research results suggest that a complete service package should include individual services for the husband, the wife, and their children, and treatment for the whole family as well.

Moreover, it is better to have a social worker who is mainly in charge of the family with authorized power. Finally, it is suggested that the treatment focus should be family, and services should be extended to all family members. The service goal is to increase the well-being of the whole family, rather than what makes easy for social workers.
