Use of Infrared Sensors as a New Method in Estimating Wilson's Storm Petrels' Population Density in Antarctica

Listed in NASA Earthdata CMR

As a new method for localization of Wilson's Storm Petrel Oceanites oceanicus (Oceanitidae) nests, an infrared sensor was used at Cierva Point, Gerlache Strait, in the Antarctic Peninsula.

Description

It detects the heat emitted by breeding birds beneath debris. Seven other coastal areas with an average surface of 548 m2 were sampled.

The infrared sensor showed to be highly sensitive to the presence of birds beneath rocks; no error sources were found. This method was compared to another conventional method to estimate effectiveness. Besides providing reliable density values, the use of infrared sensor has reduced human impact on colonies because no traumatic methods were used in order to find nests.
