The agency created and maintained these records in accordance with the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986 (EPCRA), which required informing the public about chemical hazards in the communities.
Description
Additional data on waste management and source reduction activities were later collected under the Pollution Prevention Act of 1990. TRIS was used to supply data to the public about chemical and hazards and wastes.
This series contains information on toxic chemical releases and hazardous waste management activities reported annually by certain chemical industrial facilities. Included are records on routine releases to the air, ground, and water; on toxic waste water sent to treatment, storage, or disposal sites; as well as on accidental spills and leaks. There is a record for every facility that had 10 or more employees, and produced, imported, or processed more than 25,000 pounds of over 300 chemicals; or used more than 10,000 pounds of a listed chemical.

The pre-1990 files focus on the location and quantities of chemicals and their release into the environment, and the post-1990 files also contain information about pollution prevention and source reduction activities. The post-1990 files also include quantities of the listed chemical recycled and used for energy recovery on-site, quantities transferred off-site for recycling and energy recovery, source reduction activities, and methods used to identify those activities.
The records identify the Environmental Protection Agency region, state, and county codes. The Office of the Environmental Information began maintaining this series in 1999. This data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC).
