The agency compiled these annual data on employment and finance statistics from a combination of sources including official records, direct mail surveys, and telephone contacts.
Description
The agency prepared summary statistic files for researchers. This series consists of two parts: employment statistics files and finance statistics files.
The employment statistics files provide data on full- and part-time employment, full-time equivalent employment, and October payroll statistics by type of governm ent (state, county, city, township, special district, and school district) and by function (local schools, police protection, higher education, fire protection, financial administration, general control, highways, public welfare, sanitation and other sewerage, sewerage, parks and recreation, health, hospital, water supply, electric power, gas supply, transit systems, natural resources, corrections, libraries, airports, water transportation, other education, state liquor stores, Employment Security Administration, and housing and urban renewal).

Also shown in the employment statistics files are data on policies for labor - management relations, number of organized employees by function, number of bargaining units, number of employees in bargaining units, number of contractual arrangements, and number of employees covered by contractual arrangements. The finance statistics files contain data on revenue, expenditure, indebtedness and debt transactions, and cash and security holdings.
They are provided for states and local governments (1967 through 1977 files have data only for local governments). Local governments include the 75 largest Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas, counties, municipalities, townships, school districts, and special districts. Revenue data are provided by source; expenditures are shown by function such as education, highways, and public welfare, and also by type including intergovernmental, current operation, and capital outlay.
In addition, the financial statistics of employee - retirement systems and of utilities operated by state and local governments are shown. This data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC). See the ARC catalog entry for this series for more information on this data and how to order it.
