Replication Data for: Fig 19.15, GPDs, Female scars vs number of sexual partners, 04 July 2026

Listed in data.InDoRES

I checked this SYSTAT file TWO TIMES on 06 Nov 2012 for the following publication: Hoogland, J. L. 2013.

Description

Why do females mate with more than one male?—Insights from longterm research. Journal of Mammalogy 94:731-744.

These data are from 1989 through 1995. All data on female scars are from GPDs at Petrified Forest National Park for 1989 through1995 No GPD data from Redondo Meadow Colony (RMC) at Valles Caldera National Preserve (VCNP) from 2013 through 2016 or from Visitor Center Colony (VCNP) from 2017 and 2018 All data on female scars collect just before or shortly after end of mating season GPD Redondo Meadow Colony (RMC, studied in 2013 through 2016) was at Valles Caldera National Preserve (VCNP).

GPD Visitor Center Colony (VCC, studied in 2017 and 2018) was also at VCNP. GPD colony at Petrified Forest National Park (PEFO) was studied from 1989 through 1995. For this file, NO GPD data from either RMC or VCC Scars = number of fresh wounds and scars observed during handling Most wounds and scars were on face, but some where on flank or leg Year = year for which scars were recorded shortly before or shortly after end of mating season.

These data used for Fig 19.15 in Hoogland 2026. This file ready for longterm storage on 17 May 2025. This file has no information on eartags or Nyanzol markers for GPD individual identities.

GPD female ID = numerical ID for GPD female for each year--for my convenience only. I considered data from the same prairie dog in different years to be independent. Female survivorship = 0 = GPD female did NOT survive until next mating season Female survivorship = 1 = GPD female DID survive until next mating season Litter size = litter size at first emergence of offspring from their natal nursery-burrow = number of weanlings.

No data on survivorship of GPD females in 1995 because plague struck my GPD study-colony at PEFO in 1995 and I did not study this study-colony in 1996. For Fig 19.15, I did not use information in this file for GPD female survivorship or litter size. File name = Fig 19.15, GPDs, Female scars vs number of sexual partners, 04 July 2026
