Artisans of peace: a qualitative analysis of a performing arts-based intervention for peacebuilding with children and youth in Colombia

Purpose: There is increasing attention being drawn from the literature and policy to build peace from the ground up.

Critical studies expose the inadequacies of liberal peace regimes advocating for an everyday peace in the peacebuilding regime. Peacebuilding is future orientated and thus calls for a focus on children and youth in the research.
This involves a need to adapt methods that meet the needs and abilities of this cohort to capture their agency and build their capacities. <br><br>

Method
Qualitative, participatory, arts-based methods allow for creativity, hope, and change for the future. This paper will present qualitative data from an ethnographic study of 75 children and young people between the ages of 7 and 18 across three urban settings in Colombia. <br><br>Data: A thematic analysis was used to identify the findings of the intervention. Pictures, videos, researcher observations and notes, as well as transcripts of interviews with key adult stakeholders were utilized to identify the recurring themes in the research. <br><br>Findings: A thematic analysis identified four major themes-conceptualizations of childhood and youth, social emotional learning, views of Colombia, and peace.
Finally, the challenges of such inventions-each of which have corresponding subthemes relating to sustainable peace building and peace keeping with children and youth.
