Criminal Case Processing in Metropolitan Courts File

Listed in Harvard Dataverse

The agency conducted this project to determine the scope and extent of the delay in processing criminal cases in metropolitan courts and used the files to suggest test techniques to reduce the delay.

Description

The agency arranged with the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research to process and distribute the data. This series consists of 21 samples from local governments around the United States, each of which contains data on 400 to 600 individual criminal cases disposed of at the general jurisdiction trial court level in either the 1976 fiscal or calendar year.

The variables include geographic location, and facets of criminal justice administration, such as disposition type, most serious charge against the defendant, and dates of arrest, trial, disposition, and sentencing. This data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC). See the ARC catalog entry for this series for more information on this data and how to order it.
