The Three-Body and n-Body Problems

Listed in Borealis

This project examines the n-body problem involving three or more masses in two dimensions.

Description

It begins with deriving and numerically solving the differential equations governing the motion of the three-body problem. Following this, the chaotic nature of the system is analyzed through various demonstrations, plots, animations, and Explore windows.

A selection of special periodic solutions to the three-body problem is then presented. Next, the project applies this system to astronomy, exploring several gravitational orbits within our solar system. Finally, it generalizes to higher-order n-body systems with an example of five bodies.
