Passenger Origin and Destination Surveys

Listed in Harvard Dataverse

The agency created and used these files to monitor airline passenger traffic and ticket pricing.

Description

The agency also used these files to evaluate the impact of the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978. This series consists of five "data banks" that contain data from surveys of domestic and international airline passenger traffic.

The first is the Ticket Dollar Value Origin and Destination Survey (Data Bank 1, Data Bank 1A). Records include the mileage for each itinerary segment, a numeric code identifying each city / airport, and a world area code to indicate the state / country. The second is Ticket Dollar Value Origin and Destination Survey (Data Bank 1B). It contains the same data as Data Bank 1A, with the addition of dual codes for the operating and ticketed carrier. The Directional Origin and Destination (International / Territorial) Survey (Data Bank 2A) is the third one.

It contains outbound and inbound passenger totals for the quarter of the file data and the three immediately preceding quarters, for international routings that have been classified as unidirectional by applying trip breaking criteria to all ticketed routings. Ticketed origin and destination, as well as all downline points in the directional routing are identified. The fourth is the Directional Origin and Destination (Domestic) Survey (Data Bank 2C).

It contains outbound and inbound passenger totals for the quarter of the file date and the three immediately preceding quarters, for domestic routings that have been classified as unidirecti onal by applying trip breaking criteria to all ticketed routings. The files contain the same passenger data for domestic portions of international routings included in the totals in Data Bank 2A. All downline points in the directional routing are identified.

Finally, the Origin and Destination Survey City / Airport Nomenclature (Data Bank 5) files contain the letter alphabetic codes, numeric codes, full name spelling (up to 30 characters), abbreviated name spelling (up to 20 characters), and geographic coordinates for all cities in flight itineraries reported in Data Bank 1, Data Bank 1A, Data Bank 1B, Data Bank 2A, and Data Bank 2C. This data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC).

See the ARC catalog entry for this series for more information on this data and how to order it.
