A Multi-building Indoor and Outdoor Environmental Quality Dataset with Brick Schema Metadata Representation from a University Campus Network

Listed in Teesside University Research Data Repository

Description

This dataset provides continuous indoor and outdoor air quality and environmental measurements collected across ten buildings of the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) Syracuse, New York campus, accompanied with semantic Brick-ontology metadata describing each monitored space and, where documented, its mechanical system. Measurements were recorded by 22 custom-built air quality device (AQD) units, including 20 indoor and 2 outdoor devices, logging at a nominal 5-minute interval and stored via a Firebase-to-PostgreSQL pipeline, together with a co-located outdoor instrument mast on the Baker Laboratory roof released as two additional files.

Indoor units report temperature, relative humidity, CO2, particulate matters (including PM1, PM2.5, PM10), total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), illuminance, and sound level. The two outdoor AQD units report the same nine core variables, in addition to wind speed and two auxiliary temperature channels. The outdoor mast is a single logger carrying two independent commercial sensor assemblies and is released as two files including an outdoor device file (temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, illuminance, PM10, PM2.5, and sound level) and a weather station file (wind speed and gust, wind direction, rainfall, snow depth, solar irradiance, and photosynthetically active radiation).

The main release window spans August 1, 2025, to August 31, 2026; the outdoor mast began recording on October 17, 2025, and continues a few days past the window’s end. Usable coverage per device, after removing anomaly data, ranges from about 42% to 92% of the expected 5-minute samples over that window and is reported per device. Each of the ten buildings is separately described in Turtle file format using the Brick ontology, encoding a site–building–room–sensor–point hierarchy and, where the building’s mechanical system is documented, its air handling unit (AHU), variable air volume (VAV), heat pump, and energy recovery ventilator relationships to each monitored space.

The combination of long duration, multi-building sensor data with machine-readable building and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) metadata supports research on indoor and outdoor environmental quality, occupant comfort, ventilation and building energy performance, and cross-building or cross-dataset queries using the Brick standard.
