Description

Observed percentage Expected percentage Victimized mother was NOT closest kin 44.12% 45.32% Victimized nursery-burrow was closest to killer's nursery-burrow 51.16% 38.77% Victimized mother had lower body mass 44.68% 39.00% FILE DESCRIPTION Keywords: BTPDs, Whom did infanticidal females kill when presented with a choice File name = Fig 21.7, BTPDs, Whom did infanticidal females kill when presented with a choice, 28 July 2026 OLDFilename: Fig 21.7, BTPDs, What did BTPD killers do when presented with a choice? 16 April 2024 Data shown are only from BTPD female killers who had a choice among two or more mothers/litters within the home coterie territory to victimize.

BTPD killers with 0 or only 1 other lactating females in the home territory are not shown here. I scored an infanticide whenever a female entered another female’s home nursery-burrow with pre-emergent offspring and remained there for >=5 mins. The number of infanticidal females for each group is shown in the labels to the X-axis of Fig 21.7 = the number of infanticidal BTPD females presented with a choice of at least two litters to maraud.

This EXCEL file and Fig 21.7 are highly similar to Fig 7.8 of Hoogland 1995 (page 142), with one exception: I have changed label and the bars for far left bars. Label now reads "Killer targeted offspring of mother who was NOT her closest kin"--vs previous "Killer chose mother to victimize who WAS her closest kin" I have made this change because the prediction is that a killer should choose a mother to to victimize that was NOT her closest kin.

Data in this file checked TWO TIMES for both Hoogland 1995 and Hoogland 2026. Note that this EXCEL file and Fig 21.7 compare infanticidal BTPD females vs the mothers of victimized litters--not infanticidal mothers vs the juvenile victim These data used for Fig 21.7 in Hoogland 2026. This file ready for longterm storage on 16 April 2025.

I considered data from the same prairie dog in different years to be independent. Expected values are frequencies that should have resulted if killing was independent of (a) kinship between killer and potential victimized mother, (b) proximity of nursery-burrow containing potential victims to nursery-burrow of killer, or (c) body mass of potential victimized mothers vs body mass of killer File name = Fig 21.7, BTPDs, Whom did infanticidal females kill when presented with a choice, 28 July 2026
