Disaster History File (DHF)

The agency created the DHF to collect historical information about foreign disasters for the purpose of directing future disaster related foreign aid.

Description

The agency used the data to coordinate United States disaster relief and develop emergency management strategies. This series contains basic information about foreign disasters, including disaster name, location (country, region (North and Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Middle East (Near East), Asia, Oceania (Pacific), and t he West Indies (Caribbean), and longitude and latitude), date, type (accident, avalanche, civil strife, cold wave, cyclone, displaced persons, drought, earthquake, emergency, epidemic, expellees, famine, fire, flood, food shortage, heat wave, hurricane, infestation, landslide, power shortage, refugees, storm, tsunami, typhoon, unusual phenomena, and volcano), and mass casualties.

The DHF also contains information about the commodities and services provided as disaster relief by the United States, such as food relief, technical assistance, medical assistance, and economic assistance. The DHF consists of data relating to disaster related foreign aid and emergency management. This data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC).
