Herbarium Specimens - Bhutan National Herbarium, National Biodiversity Centre

Listed in GBIF

The National Herbarium of Bhutan (THIM), housed at the National Biodiversity Centre (NBC) in Serbithang, Thimphu, is the country’s national repository of preserved plant specimens and an important centre for botanical research, taxonomy, biodiversity documentation, and conservation.

Description

It holds around 21,700 specimens, mainly collected from Bhutan’s diverse ecosystems and altitudinal gradients, with additional specimens from China, India, Nepal, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The foundation of the herbarium dates back to the Flora of Bhutan project, initiated in the early 1970s, which led to extensive botanical exploration and specimen collection. Duplicate specimens were retained in Bhutan, while many collections were deposited in major international herbaria. The herbarium was relocated to Taba in 1987 and later moved to its present location at Serbithang.

In 1998, the National Herbarium and Flora of Bhutan Project, supported by DANIDA, strengthened the herbarium through improved facilities, capacity building, and publication of the Flora of Bhutan. The herbarium became operational in 2003. The collection represents more than a century of botanical exploration, with some records dating to 1914.

It includes historically important collections associated with R.E. Cooper, George Sherriff, the Flora of Bhutan project, and holotype and voucher specimens of newly described species. Each specimen provides permanent scientific evidence of plant occurrence and valuable information on its identity, locality, elevation, habitat, collector, and date. NBC is digitizing the collection through the Bhutan Biodiversity Specimen Repository, providing specimen records and taxonomic information for researchers, conservationists, students, educators, and the public.

High-resolution specimen images will be added as digitization progresses, helping preserve and share Bhutan’s botanical heritage for future generations.
