Focusing on adaptations from 1989 to 2021, it explores how and why violence is increasingly visualised and reshaped through the formal and interpretive possibilities of the screen. It argues that these representations are shaped by their cultural and historical contexts, while also foregrounding how adaptation reframes the relationship between violence and masculinity.

In doing so, this study highlights how evolving constructs of masculinity inform the meaning and prominence of violence on the Shakespearean screen.

Thesis is embargoed until 31 July 2029.
