Deciphering mechanisms underlying vascular cell pathophysiology in malaria retinopathy

Cerebral malaria (CM) is a severe encephalopathy caused by sequestration of Plasmodium-infected red blood cells in the brain, leading to neurological complications and high mortality in children.
Description
Malarial retinopathy (MR) is often observed in CM and serves as a diagnostic marker. In a murine model of CM induced by <em>Plasmodium berghei</em> ANKA, we used fundus imaging, Optical Coherence Tomography and fluorescein angiography to examine retinal changes and performed single-cell and spatial transcriptomic analyses to investigate molecular alterations associated with disease.
This integrative approach highlights the murine model as a useful platform for studying neurovascular pathology in CM.<br><i><br>Thesis is embargoed until 31 July 2027.</i>
