Data set reset Slipway

Listed in Teesside University Research Data Repository

The present study investigates the structural and hydrodynamic responses of a fishing vessel launched via a 4° inclined slipway using three-dimensional numerical simulations.

Description

Emphasis is placed on capturing transient phenomena during the sliding and water-entry phases, including hydrodynamic pressure distribution, frictional resistance evolution, and launching velocity characteristics. The numerical model was developed using a volume of fluid (VOF) approach coupled with dynamic mesh motion to replicate real launching dynamics.

Results show that the vessel experienced a peak hydrodynamic pressure of 141,872.5 Pa at initial water impact, concentrated along the keel and bow regions, which corresponds to the moment of maximum fluid-structure interaction. Pressure distribution was found to be non-uniform and transient, characterized by spatial gradients and wave-induced oscillations along the hull. Furthermore, the peak total resistance force recorded during sliding was 13,553.5 N, revealing a nonlinear force evolution influenced by contact friction, gravitational acceleration, and local slipway geometry.

At the end of the launching trajectory, the vessel attained a velocity of 8 m/s, placing it within a high-energy regime with significant implications for impact-induced stress. These findings reinforce the necessity of integrating hydrodynamic behavior, resistance mechanics, and launch velocity predictions into the design of slipway systems to ensure structural integrity and operational safety. The validated simulation framework provides a critical foundation for optimizing traditional slipway design under Southeast Asian maritime conditions.
