Numerical Modeling and Performance Evaluation of Ternary Molten Salt Thermal Energy Storage for Solar Photovoltaic Systems on Ro-Ro Ferry Vessels

Listed in Teesside University Research Data Repository

Description

This dataset supports the research entitled “Numerical Modeling and Performance Evaluation of Ternary Molten Salt Thermal Energy Storage for Solar Photovoltaic Systems on Ro-Ro Ferry Vessels.” The research hypothesizes that integrating a Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system using ternary molten salt into a Solar Photovoltaic (PV) system onboard a Ro-Ro ferry operating along the Pendik (Turkey) – Trieste (Italy) route can significantly enhance solar energy utilization, stabilize electrical energy supply, and reduce shipboard emissions.

The dataset is provided in Excel format and contains processed and raw data derived from 15 route points along the vessel’s operational corridor. Solar irradiation data for each coordinate point were obtained from the NASA POWER database based on mapped latitude and longitude positions generated using QGIS software. These data were further processed to calculate effective solar irradiation, estimated solar power generation, and the corresponding electrical energy output.

The dataset also includes numerical simulation results performed using Engineering Equation Solver (EES), where the thermophysical properties of ternary molten salt reported in the manuscript were applied to model the TES performance. The simulation evaluates the enhancement of energy storage capability, electrical energy availability, and emission reduction potential when TES is integrated into the ship’s PV system. Additionally, the dataset contains graphical results that were reproduced in the manuscript using Origin software.

These data enable full transparency and reproducibility of the numerical modeling, energy performance evaluation, and emission reduction analysis presented in the study. This dataset allows other researchers to understand how solar resource data were gathered, processed, and integrated into shipboard energy modeling, and provides a complete basis for replicating, validating, or extending the presented research.
