Risk management for major glacial and periglacial events in the Alps over the past two centuries

Listed in data.InDoRES

The database developed in this study documents glacial and periglacial events across the European Alps over the past two centuries (mainly) that required risk management.

Description

Prevention measures from a political perspective are not uniform across Alpine countries. We have chosen to primarily present examples from France, Switzerland and Italy.

Although Austria is also cited according to the sources we collected. The authors acknowledge the limitations of this study, particularly the challenges associated with obtaining comprehensive data; nevertheless, it is conceived as an exploratory approach. As such, it may serve as an initial step toward the development of a broader collaborative framework.

The purpose is not only to provide a detailed account of the risk management measures implemented, but also to assess the frequency and intensity of such events and to trace historical management trends. An historical approach enables the analysis of change processes in risk management (Giacona et al., 2017, 2019), beyond mere event description. We thus seek to understand how Alpine glacial and periglacial hazards have shaped scientific knowledge and risk management practices.

The data presented here relates to how each glacial or periglacial event has been managed in relation to the risk it poses. We have considered 3 hazards : ice avalanches, rock avalanches and glacial lake outburst floods. Each hazard has its own attribute table.

For each event, the following information is provided: its precise location, region and country; the volume of material released; damage and casualties, if any; the causes; and how the hazard was managed according to the eight risk pillars developed by Bazin et al., 2026; bibliographical references where the info were found.> - Relationship between files, if important: Each hazard has an attribute table. The main file is , comprising three sub-files for 1) ice avalanches, 2) rock avalanches, and 3) GLOFs A GeoPackage File (.gpkg) in QGIS is also available for mapping purposes.
