<p dir="ltr">We present a curated, open-access, searchable database of eighteenth-century information about fishing and marine life in French colonies.
Description
Between 1723 and 1737, the French Commissioner of the Navy and Inspector of Fisheries, <b>Francois le Masson du Parc</b> sent questionnaires to marine officials around the world in order to deepen France’s knowledge of the state of global fisheries and to strengthen France’s grasp on prospective and existing colonies.
While the qualitative and highly subjective data contains obvious biases and limitations, the collection of sent and received questionnaires offers a rare porthole view into the history of France’s technocratic governance and control of the seas, along with the observed state of marine resources extracted in a hitherto little explored and largely historically anonymous decade of human interaction with the life of the oceans.

Leaning into the concept of the Colonial Machine, we demonstrate the importance of marine products in the development of the French empire. The Masson du Parc Online Database (MDPOD) presented here is a dynamic tool which can be employed to investigate the cogs that geared France’s colonial machine and provides unique information about the abundance and depletion of marine species in areas of the world where information is otherwise limited. </p><p><br></p>
