CATHODE-ANODE REACTION COUPLES CAUSE CORROSION

At the cathode, there is an addition of electrons or a reduction in the oxidation number of a chemical substance. For example, in an electrochemical cell that uses metal electrodes such as copper, reduction of copper ions (Cu2+) to copper metal (Cu) occurs at the cathode.

The anode, on the other hand, is the electrode where the oxidation reaction takes place. At the anode, there is a release of electrons or an increase in the oxidation number of a chemical substance. For example, in an electrochemical cell that uses metal electrodes such as zinc, oxidation of zinc metal (Zn) to zinc ions (Zn2+) occurs at the anode.
