Description
Mean percentage per year of colony residents that were immigrants for BTPD, UPDs, and WTPDs Temporary BTPD male immigrants that did not copulate 0.57% BTPD male immigrants that stayed and copulated 0.84% Temporary BTPD female immigrants that did not wean a litter 0.84% BTPD female immigrants that stayed and weaned a litter 0.26% Temporary UPD male immigrants that did not copulate 0.26% UPD male immigrants that stayed and copulated 0.26% Temporary UPD female immigrants that did not wean a litter 0.09% UPD female immigrants that stayed and weaned a litter 0.05% Temporary WTPD male immigrants that did not copulate 1.97% WTPD male immigrants that stayed and copulated 1.48% Temporary WTPD female immigrants that did not wean a litter 0.25% WTPD female immigrants that stayed and weaned a litter 0.49% FILE DESCRIPTION Keywords: BUW, Percentage per year of immigrants File name: Fig 22.12, BUW, Mean percentage per year of residents that were immigrants, 30 July 2026 OLD File name: Fig 22.12, BUW, Mean percentage per year of residents at the colony-site that were immigrants of different types from other colonies, 23 April 2025.
This graph shows the four different types of immigrants into three prairie dog study-colonies. Comparable data were not available for Gunnison’s prairie dogs, because I studied study-areas within large GPD colonies, and I therefore could not mark 100% of residents (including possible immigrants) at that those three large GPD colonies. Note that numbers in this graph are PERCENTAGES.

Note that Immigration was rare for both sexes of all three species. These percentages are for immigrants into my study-colonies in late winter, spring--and sometimes early summer as well. I do not have information in immigration in late summer, autumn, and early winter before my field seasons began..
These percentages checked TWO TIMES on 30 Aug 2023, and again on 25 July 2026. If an immigrant arrived in March through May 2002 (for example), and was still at study-colony in 2003 and 2004, then that immigrant was used to to calculate the mean percentage of colony residents that were immigrants in 2002--but NOT in 2003, and 2004. In other words, a new immigrant was scored as an immigrant only in the year of immigration as either (a) a temporary male or female immigrant or (b) a male or female immigrant who reproduced in either 2002 or a later year.
In this EXCEL file and Fig 22.12, each immigrant was scored for ONE YEAR ONLY, but I had to use data for all years of residency at the study colony to determine if the immigrant was temporary (i.e., it remained <10 days with no reproduction) or whether it remained long enough to copulate (males) or stayed remained long enough to wean a litter (females) Note that percentages for immigrants are for MAY of each year. If an immigrant arrived in May 2002 (for example) and reproduced in 2003, I scored it for 2002 as a immigrant that reproduced.
If this immigrant that arrived in May 2002 and disappeared within 10 days, then I scored it as a temporary immigrant for 2002 that did not copulate (for males) or as a temporary immigrant that did not wean a litter (for females). In both cases, I scored the immigrant for year 2002. For all four species, my research each year began in mid- or late winter and continued through late spring—and sometimes into early summer as well (Chapter 4).
I have no good information for any species on immigration throughout the summer, autumn, and early winter months. These data used for Fig 22.12 in Hoogland 2026. This file ready for longterm storage on 23 April 2025.
All BTPD data are from single Rankin Ridge Colony at Wind Cave National Park All WTPD data from single study-colony at Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge near Walden, Colorado All UPD data from single Horse Corral Colony at Bryce Canyon National Park As noted above, no good data on immigration for GPDs.
