Replication data for Fig 14.7, 14.8, 14.9, BTPDs, male body mass vs copulations and weanlings, 05 May 2026
Listed in data.InDoRES
Description
Year of mating = year when copulation(s) occurred Age = age in years since first emergence from natal nursery burrow For this file, Age = 1 = yearling, and Age = 2 = male of age >=2 = 2,3,4,5,or 6 years old So, for this EXCEL file, age has only two categories: 1 (yearlings) and adults (>=2 years old) See other files for more precise analysis of BTPD male age vs male copulations and weanlings sired. Sexual partners = number of different females with whom male copulated during mating season Weanlings = number of weanlings sired Weanling = juvenile offspring at first emergence from natal burrow-entrance Male body mass in autumn = body mass in previous autumn (details in other files) Male body mass during mating season = body mass just before, during, or just after mating season, which usually started in mid-to late February and continued until mid-March I defined mating season as time interval between (and including) the first copulation through last copulation at the study-colony Male body mass at 1st juvenile emergences = body mass just before, during, or just first appearance of weanlings in May or June For year, 75 = 1975, 76 = 1976, 80 = 1980, etc.
I considered data from the same male in different years to be independent. Notice that this file includes data from BOTH yearling BTPD males (1-year olds) AND >=2-year old BTPD males-- even though yearling BTPD males usually did not copulate. Body masses are all in GRAMS All data in this EXCEL file from single BTPD Rankin Ridge study-colony at Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota Date = 06 Feb 2020 OLD file name = BTPDs, male wts vs cops, babies, I created this file from SYSTAT file = allmalwt, which I created on 03 Nov 1989 for Hoogland 1995 I assumed that I checked this file TWO TIMES at creation.

Values of 88 and 99 for MISSING DATA for certain variables OLD File name = Fig 14.7, BTPD male body mass vs copulation, weanlings, 06 March 2025 These data used for Figures 14.7, 14.8, and 14.9 in Hoogland 2026. This file ready for longterm storage on 06 March 2025. Remember: values of 88 and 99 indicate missing data.
I do not remember why I used 88 and 99 rather than simple blank cells or "." I use this single BTPD file for three different, consecutive figures in Hoogland 2026: 14.7, 14.8. and 14.9. Sexual partners = number of different females with whom single BTPD copulated. No eartags in this file.
Case number (2-638) = single BTPD male per year I considered data from the same BTPD male in different years to be independent. The number above each bar (Fig 14.7) or SE line (Figs 14.8 and 14.9) = number of BTPD males from which I collected data Figs 14.7, 14.8, and 14.9 all show means + one standard error (SEM) For Figs 14.8 and 14.9. all data are from males that copulated with at least one female. Male body mass in autumn = male body mass in previous September or October Male body mass at 1st juvenile emergences = male body mass just before, during, or just after juveniles were first emerging from their natal burrow-entrances Almost all BTPD males at >=2 years copulated.
Yearling BTPD males usually DID NOT copulate, copulate, but yearling BTPD males rarely DID copulate. See Chapter 11 of Hoogland 2026. File name = Fig 14.7, 14.8, 14.9, BTPDs, male body mass vs copulations and weanlings, 05 May 2026
