Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) Files from the 21st Census of Population and Housing

In the 10-percent Virgin Islands of the United States sample, each housing unit record contains the geographic code for the Virgin Islands of the United States because it constitutes a single PUMA. Each housing record contains information on the number of rooms and bedrooms; kitchen facilities; units in structure; year structure built; farm status and value; condominium status; vacancy status (i.e. housing owned or rented); property value; mortgage status and selected monthly owner costs; real estate taxes; cost of utilities and heating fuel; fire, hazard, and flood insurance; farm residence contract (monthly) rent; gross rent; meals included in rent; source of water; plumbing facilities; sewage disposal; telephone and vehicle availability.

The housing record also contains information on household type; family, subfamily and household relationships; presence of subfamilies in household; presence and age of children; year ho useholder moved into housing unit; linguistic isolation; and family and household income in 1989. Each record for an occupied housing unit is followed by one record for each person in the housing unit which contains information on age; sex; race; Hispanic origin; relationship; marital status; children ever born; ancestry; place of birth; year of entry into the United States; citizenship; language spoken at home; ability to speak English; school enrollment and type of school; educational attainment; migration PUMA and state; and work disability, mobility, and self-care limitation status.

The "person record" also contains information on industry; class of worker; occupation; work status (including unemployment), usual hours worked per week, weeks worked, poverty status, and income by type in 1989; time of departure for and travel time to work; means of transportation to work; vehicle occupancy; place of work PUMA and state; disability; military status; periods of active military service duty; and veteran period of service.
