Omdat hij als zendeling naar Indië wilde, meldde deze man zich na de tweede wereldoorlog aan als oorlogsvrijwilliger.
Description
In Indië wilde hij dan overgaan naar de zending. Hij werd opgeleid tot hospik bij de Koninklijke Landmacht en in oktober 1945 vertrok hij met De Nieuw Amsterdam naar Indië.
Na een oponthoud in Malakka en de aankomst in Tandjoeng Priok in maart 1946, hoorde hij pas van de oorlogssituatie in het land. Een patrouille viel meteen in een hinderlaag en als hospik in de polikliniek te Priok kreeg deze man meteen te maken met door Nederlandse militairen doodgeslagen koelies en veel gesneuvelde militairen. Bij de Eerste Politionele Actie werd hij ingedeeld bij de Staf W-Brigade, als geheim schrijver.

In konvooi kreeg hij een ongeluk bij Tandjoeng Sari en liep daarbij een whiplash en een schedelbasisfractuur op, zoals pas veel later bleek. Hij deed ondanks zware hoofdpijnen gewoon dienst en maakte zijn Bevelen van Dienst op.
