I created Fig on 31 July 2026 The number above each bar is the number of litters/nursery burrows than my students and I could monitor for possible infanticide.
For WTPDs, the tiny bar indicates frequency = 0%--i.e., I never observed an infanticide at my WTPD colony, but the tiny bar underscores that my students and I carefully watched 275 liters/burrow-entrances for possible infanticides. For BTPDs, whole-litter infanticides of unearned offspring were common. For GPDs and UPDs, however, most infanticides of single juveniles occurred aboveground.

For more information and details about infanticides among BGU, see Chapter 21 of Hoogland 2026. All BTPD data are from my single Rankin Ridge Colony at Wind Cave National Park (1975 through 1989) All UPD data are from my single Horse Corral Colony (HCC) at Bryce Canyon National Park (1995-2005) Some GPD data are from my single colony at Petrified Forest National Park (PEFO) (1989 through 1994) Some GPD data are from my Redondo Meadow Colony (RMC) at Valles Caldera National Preserve (VCNP) (2013 through 2016) Some GPD data are from my Visitor Center Colony (VCC) at VCNP (2017 and 2018) Data in this EXCEL file and in Fig 26.3 are SUMMARIES of data over many years.
Raw data are in Chapter 21 of Hoogland 2026 and in my field notes. Factors that might explain these radical interspecific differences in infanticide include size and density of colonies and wards, percent of time that individuals spend in the home coterie or clan territory, individual differences in the tendency to commit--or be victimized by-- infanticide, and other factors (see Chapters 21 and 26 of Hoogland 2026). All data in this file and in Fig 26.3 has been checked TWO TIMES on 16 January 2025, and again on 31July 2026.
