Listed in SWISSUbase and CESSDA Data Catalogue — shown once because both records carry DOI 10.23662/fors-ds-303-1

In a prospective study, the roles of personality dimensions, coping strategies and environmental resources and restrictions in adjusting to spinal cord injury are investigated.

Description

The current study examines the relationships between selected variables of previously suggested importance and several measures of psychological adjustment and explores the interplay between the different influence variables. Up to the present time (december 1998) 275 questionnaires have been completed by para- and quadriplegic persons, including inpatients of two Swiss rehabilitation centres as well as community residents from the German and French speaking parts of Switzerland.

All ages were represented. The span of measured psychological factors reached from depressive and posttraumatic symptoms to stress related growth. Symptoms were measured by instruments like the Beck's Depression Inventory, the Symptom Check List, the DSM-IV PTSD criteria, the Impact of Event Scale and others.

Independent variables include measures of social support with a special focus on family functioning, measures of coping and emotion regulation processes, and personality dispositions like the sense of coherence, action control, and self-image. Comparisons were made with a large control group of undisabled people. A longitudinal multicenter study by the same authors to validate the findings and further examine the way and direction of functioning of the highlighted variables will start in January 1999.

It will show the complex working up process of the trauma with patients and their attachment figures within the first two years. Key words: sci, extreme stress, coping, regulation of emotion, ptsd, personal growth, social support
