NGC 6505 Einstein ring survey collection

Listed in IVOA Registry (Virtual Observatory)

ESA's Euclid space telescope has captured a remarkable Einstein ring around the galaxy NGC 6505, located approximately 590 million light-years from Earth.

Description

This phenomenon occurs when the gravitational field of a massive foreground galaxy bends the light from a more distant galaxy, in this case situated 4.42 billion light-years away, forming a nearly perfect ring of light. The discovery highlights Euclid's advanced capabilities in observing gravitational lensing effects, which are instrumental in studying the distribution of dark matter and the expansion of the universe.
