Employed persons in the production industry in the territory of today´s NRW (Workplace Census), 1850 to 1970.

In addition the non-commercial sector of agriculture and private households, the public service sector, including railways, postal services and social insurance, was not initially included either. In the early censuses it was not so significant that the employee was proven not in his place of residence, but at the place of work, since the place of residence and the place of work were a short distance apart. Later, an ever-increasing number of commuters travelled long distances to their place of work, so that the place of the survey gained in importance..

For the objective differentiation of the tabular columns (designation of the time series), the designations of the 1970 workplace census with minor modifications were used. Due to the extensive territorial changes in the 120-year period under review, which thus also cover a period prior to the state´s existence, the comments are of particular importance. Due to the considerable scope of the annotations on territorial changes they are not listed in the table header but they are available as a downloadable PDF file.
