Agri-environmental application of engineered silica for toxic trace element soil remediation

Listed in ZivaHub and Deakin Research Online and DMU Figshare — shown once because both records carry DOI 10.17034/32640150.v1

Toxic trace elements (TTEs) have always been a focus of attention in the agricultural field because they are closely related to food safety issues.

Description

In recent years, the interest in functional mesoporous silica (FMS) materials have become the focus of research due to their excellent TTEs adsorption properties. However, the application of FMS materials in agriculture is still less than that in the pharmaceutical and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) industries and wet/solution-based waste stream treatment.

Therefore, the adsorption performance of FMS on TTE in soil and its adsorption mechanism still need to be studied in detail. Cd and As are widely reported as two TTEs which have a high risk of plant uptake and threaten human health. For regions where rice is the staple food, its harmfulness needs to be paid more attention to.

In southern China, the soil TTE pollution problem is relatively serious, but most provinces rely on rice as a staple food. In this project, we collected soils from three provinces in southern China. Crop planting experiments were conducted on soil collected from Guizhou Province (zinc smelting plant contamination soil) and soil incubation experiments were conducted on soil collected from Hunan and Guangzhou provinces (including industry and mining contamination soil).

The results showed that FMS can effectively reduce the bioavailability of Cd and As in soil, and the accumulation of Cd in rice and pakchoi was significantly reduced (~80%) due to the deployment of FMS. At the same time, plant benefit element preloading is performed on FMS for further application optimization, results show that FMS has a high loading capacity for K, Mn, P, and salicylic acid, and the spiked FMS can replenish these elements into the solution.

Thesis is embargoed until 31 December 2026.
