Boreal Forest Canopy Height at 10 m Resolution for 2020 (BFCH v1.0)
Listed in ScienceDB
The Boreal Forest Canopy Height (BFCH) dataset provides spatially continuous canopy height estimates for the circumpolar boreal forest for the nominal year 2020 at a spatial resolution of 10 m.
Description
The dataset covers the boreal forest biome across North America and Eurasia, including Alaska, Canada, northern Europe, Russia, and northern China. The spatial domain was defined using the boreal forest extent of the WWF RESOLVE Ecoregions 2017 dataset.BFCH was generated by transferring quality-screened ICESat-2 ATL08 canopy height observations to wall-to-wall predictions using the 2020 AlphaEarth Foundations annual geospatial embeddings and a Random Forest regression model.
The reference observations were restricted to strong-beam, nighttime, snow-free ICESat-2 acquisitions collected during June–September, based on a condition-stratified assessment of ATL08 canopy height accuracy. Observations affected by recent forest loss were excluded during model development. The ESA WorldCover 2020 dataset was used to define the forest domain, and pixels outside the forest mask were assigned a canopy height of zero. The BFCH product was independently evaluated against airborne laser scanning-derived canopy height models from four boreal regions: interior Alaska, northern Ontario, southern Finland, and southeastern Norway.

The same validation framework was also used to compare BFCH with three existing global canopy height products. Users should consider that residual uncertainty may be greater in structurally heterogeneous forests, sparse-canopy areas, and tall-canopy conditions. The dataset contains 3,394 tiled GeoTIFF files exported from Google Earth Engine. Files follow the naming convention “BFCH_10m_N45E135.tif”, in which the latitude and longitude identifiers indicate the geographic position of the tile.
To reduce storage requirements while preserving numerical precision, canopy height predictions in metres were multiplied by 100 and stored as integer pixel values. The physical canopy height in metres must therefore be calculated as:Canopy height (m) = stored pixel value × 0.01.For example, a stored pixel value of 1534 represents a canopy height of 15.34 m. A value of 0 represents zero canopy height, including areas outside the forest mask.
The dataset is intended to support research and applications related to boreal forest structure, biomass and carbon estimation, habitat characterization, ecosystem monitoring, forest disturbance assessment, and climate–vegetation interactions.
