Direct Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil Analysis in Diesel Blends Using Gas Chromatography and Its Multivariate Analysis Potentials
Listed in ScienceDB
Hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) is an environmentally sustainable substitute for fossil diesel; however, its quantification in diesel blends remains challenging due to their similar molecular compositions.
Description
This work aimed to develop a direct, simple, and low-cost Gas Chromatography (GC) method for quantification of palm-based HVO in diesel blends without the need for complex matrix-dependent models or radioisotope measurements.
Heptadecane, which is present in both HVO and fossil diesel, was used as the reference compound for quantitative analysis, and its peak area was corrected with an internal standard. Pristane, a compound found only in fossil diesel, served as that internal standard. Analytical performance demonstrates excellent linearity (3 – 50 %v/v), precision (%RSD 0.0 – 1.8), accuracy (100.0 – 100.25 %recovery), Limit of Detection (LOD 0.5 %v/v HVO), and Limit of Quantification (LOQ 1.4 %v/v HVO).

Stability testing confirmed that accuracy and precision were maintained over 56 days under both light and dark storage conditions. Furthermore, ruggedness and reproducibility across multiple collaborators and diesel types (including Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME)- containing fuels) verified the method's transferability. Additionally, K-means clustering using chromatographic peak ratios enabled predictive quantification without requiring the unblended diesel matrix.
The developed method demonstrated strong applicability for routine HVO determination and potential extension for consumer protection testing of commercial diesel blends.
