Replication Data for: Fig 25.5 (Top), WTPDs, Female annual fitness vs the number of interspecific killings (IKS) per year, 31 July 2026
Listed in data.InDoRES
Value and data are from Linear Mixed Model by Charles R. Brown (see Hoogland and Brown 2016).
Description
Brown and I (2016) defined each female white-tail’s annual fitness as the sum of (a) her survivorship until the next mating season (0 or 1) and (b) 50% of the current year’s offspring that survived for at least 9 months after first emergence from the natal nursery-burrow (yearlings). For statistical details and more demographic information, see Brown and Hoogland 2016: Prairie dogs increase fitness by killing interspecific competitors.
Proceedings Royal Society B 283:20160144. Most white-tails never killed a Wyoming ground squirrel, but Fig 25.4 shows that 20 WTPDs were serial killers within the same year. For white-tails that lived for >=2 years at the colony-site, this figure includes one data point per each year of residency--i.e., data from the same WTPD in different years were considered independent.

Some white-tails also killed ground squirrels across two or more years (see text and Fig 25.5b). Overall, we observed IKs by 48 different marked white-tails (one data point per lifetime for 11 males and 37 females). The number above each SE line indicates the number of females for which I have information on IKs per year vs annual fitness.
These data checked TWO TIMES for writing of Hoogland and Brown 2016: Prairie dogs increase fitness by killing interspecific competitors. Proceedings Royal Society B 283:20160144. These data used for Fig 25.5 (Top) in Hoogland 2026.
This file ready for longterm storage on 28 April 2025. File name Fig 25.5 (Top), WTPDs, Female annual fitness vs the number of interspecific killings (IKS) per year (31 July 2026) 73#2 (H19) was a small immigrant in September 2010. I assume she was a juvenile at first capture, and a yearling in 2011.
Where are data for WTPD female-66 (J41) in 2012?--This info added on 19 Aug 2022, but was NOT known for Hoogland and Brown 2016 White-tail female-66 (J41) killed one WGS in 2012, but I could not estimate her fitness because 2012 was my last year of research at my WTPD colony. Female-66 did not wean offspring in 2012. So, the addition of WTPD female-66 to the file did NOT affect the statistics in Hoogland and Brown 2016.
ARS wean and ARSyrl were both 0 for WTPD female-66 in 2012 P-value and data are from Linear Mixed Model by Charles R. Brown (see Brown and Hoogland 2016. WTPD female = Nyanzol marker Victims = number of IK victims for each WTPD killer or nonkiller Body mass in May = female body mass just before, during, or just after WTPD weanlings were first emerging from their natal nursery-burrows Female age = female age in years since she first emerged from natal nursery-burrow Clan size = number of adult and yearling WTPDs in WTPD female's home territory in May (includes the female herself) Ward size = number of adult and yearling WTPDs living in female's home ward
Note
All data in this EXCEL file and Fig 25.5 are from WTPD FEMALES ONLY. See Chapter 25 of Hoogland 2026 for IKs by WTPD males. ARS wean = litter size at wean = number of weanlings.
ARS wean ranged from 0 to 8, ARS = Annual Reproductive Success ARSyrl = number of yearlings produced by female Yearling = weanling that survived for >=9 months after weaning Femsurv = 0 means that female did NOT survive until next mating season Femsurv = 1 means that female DID survive until next mating season All data in this EXCEL file and Fig 25.5 are from single WTPD study-colony at Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge near Walden, Colorado Female fitness is defined above.
