A Study of Negative Online News about Childbearing and Women’s Fertility Intentions

Listed in ScienceDB

Description

This dataset contains three data files collected between 2025 and January 2026, corresponding to a cross-sectional study, a longitudinal tracking study, and an information intervention study.Study 1 was a cross-sectional study involving 641 female participants and primarily examined the relationship between exposure frequency to negative fertility-related news and women’s fertility intentions. The main variables included exposure frequency to negative fertility-related news during the previous three months, perceived fertility-related risk, fertility intention, and demographic variables such as age, occupation, and educational attainment.Fertility intention was assessed using three items with different measurement scales; therefore, each item was first standardized and the standardized scores were then averaged to obtain a composite score.

The same scoring procedure for fertility intention was used across Studies 1–3.Study 2 was a longitudinal tracking study involving 97 female participants. It employed an 8-week repeated-measures design with three assessments per week, for a total of 24 measurement occasions. At each assessment, participants viewed a specific type of fertility-related news and then completed measures of risk perception and fertility intention.

The study was designed to examine dynamic changes in risk perception and fertility intention during repeated exposure to fertility-related news. The main variables included measurement occasion, risk perception, and fertility intention. Risk perception was assessed using a shortened version of the scale used in Study 1, while the fertility intention measure was consistent with that used in Study 1.Study 3 was an information intervention study involving 95 female participants.

Participants completed six assessments, conducted three times per week. Supportive fertility-related information was presented to examine changes in risk perception and fertility intention during the intervention. The main variables included risk perception and fertility intention, and the measures were consistent with those used in Study 2.All shared data have been anonymized and contain no directly identifiable personal information.
