Brown marmorated stinck bug Halyomorpha halys (Stal, 1855) on Madeira Island

Field surveys revealed reproducing populations confined to urban areas of Funchal and documented the species on three ornamental plants not previously reported as potential hosts, Acalypha wilkesiana, Nerium oleander, and Pelargonium sp., indicating behavioural flexibility and rapid integration into the local urban flora.

A total of 153 specimens were recorded and deposited in the University of Madeira Insect collection (UMACI). This findings provide essential baseline data for Madeira, highlights the importance of voucher supported records for reliable detection in newly invaded regions, and underscores the urgent need for targeted monitoring and early mitigation strategies.
