Parents\' Passion and Role Modeling Effects on Children\'s Participation in Physical Activities

The purpose of this research was to examine the process by which parents influence children’s beliefs and behaviors in sport participation through the mechanism of parent as role models by using parents’ passion in sport.

Description

The prediction of parents’ passion of children’s expectancy and value beliefs as well as sport participation was examined. Four hundred and ninety-eight families from Taiwan with children of 5 or 6 grades volunteered to participate in this study.

Parents’ harmonious passion and obsessive passion as well as children’s expectancy and value beliefs in sport, intensity and frequency of physical activities, were measured. A series of standard multiple regressions showed that parents’ harmonious passion was the only predictor of children’s frequency, competence expectancy, and task value in physical activities. No other significant predictions were found.

It seems that, according to the findings, parents with a higher level of harmonious passion in sport, their children will have higher confidence is sport, have higher value toward sport participation, and most importantly, will participate in sport more often.
