County Group Public Use Sample Puerto Rican and Southwestern Spanish Surname Extract Files from the 19th Census of Population and Housing

The files were used for analysis of the Spanish Surnamed and Puerto Rican populations of the United States. This series contains data extracted from the 15 percent sample of the 1970 census.

Geographic identifiers include the Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area or 1970 Census County Group. The Puerto Rican Extract files contain responses from all households / persons in the 1/100 Public Use Sample whose head was of Puerto Rican birth or parentage. The Southwestern Spanish Surname Extract files contain responses from all households / persons in the 1/100 Public Use Sample whose head had both a Spanish surname and lived in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, or Texas.The household files include data on such characteristics as year dwelling was built, persons per room, size of household family, value of property, gross monthly rent, presence of hot and cold piped water, and availability of automobiles, and telephones.
