Data of The impact of participation in criminal proceedings on mental health

Listed in DANS Data Station Social Sciences and Humanities and ODISSEI Portal — shown once because both records carry DOI 10.17026/ss/7r65wv

Transcripts from semi-structured face-to-face in-depth interviews with 30 people bereaved by a mass murder (n = 11) a single homicide (n = 9), or a fatal traffic accident (FTA) (n = 10).

Description

All provided written consent for their transcripts being shared. Two homicidally bereaved people and one FTC bereaved person were interviewed together with their spouse.

The input of their spouses was analyzed as well. We examined how aspects of the criminal trial positively and negatively influenced the grieving process of these violently bereaved people using reflexive thematic analysis. Additionally, we explored similarities and differences in perceptions within and between groups.

The interview began with a card-sorting task, in which participants sorted four cards representing aspects of the criminal trial to indicate the extent to which each aspect positively or negatively influenced their grieving process. The card-sorting task served both to structure the conversation and to provide additional insights into within- and between-group differences. People were eligible to participate if (1) they were at least 18 years old, (2) they have lost someone due to the MH17 plane disaster, a single homicide, or an FTC, (3) they have actively participated in the criminal proceedings by means of delivering an oral or written statement, (4) the district court has reached a verdict, and (5) the (first) court hearing has taken place after July 1, 2016.

On this date, the law regarding the right to speak was extended, permitting users to speak freely rather than being restricted to discussing the personal consequences of the crime. Accessibility Due to the sensitive nature of the dataset, the data can be used upon reasonable request.
